DEFINITION Road Maintenance Worker III Public Works - Roads Division - Vegetation Crew This crew is responsible for clearing of vegetation along County roadways for improved visibility and fire safety.
Work Schedule: - Summer hours: Monday - Thursday from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm with 1/2 hour lunch
- Winter hours: Monday - Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with 1/2 hour lunch

DEFINITION Under general supervision, operates and maintains a variety of complex motorized construction equipment used in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads; may act as crew leader as assigned; performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is a skilled-level class in the operation of heavy construction equipment and crusher operations. It is distinguished from Senior Road Maintenance Worker which has on-going lead responsibility for a work crew.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Drives construction equipment to and from job sites; loads and unloads equipment from trucks; operates a variety of construction equipment including gradalls, graders, transporters, dozers, rock crushers, front-end loaders, motor rollers, pavers and related equipment.
- Sets up, operates, maintains and disassembles crusher equipment; monitors crusher operations; performs specialized crusher repair and maintenance work.
- Inspects equipment, performs preventive maintenance and reports needed repairs.
- Excavates, backfills, grades and rolls construction and repair sites.
- Loads materials and supplies.
- Operates equipment used in road maintenance and construction, earth moving and grading; cuts to grade.
- Checks job sites for potential hazards; reads blueprints, plans and cut sheets; determines precautions necessary for safe operations.
- Performs manual tasks such as constructing fences and guardrails, spreading gravel and sand and/or various other support functions for the road crews; performs manual labor duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads and their appurtenances.
- May direct placement of necessary safety and traffic control devices; observes safety precautions related to the work.
- Makes operating adjustments and minor repairs to equipment such as changing buckets and teeth and tightening loose bolts and hydraulic couplings.
- Secures equipment upon completion of work.
- Prepares a variety of basic records and reports.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools related to the work.
- May direct the work of a crew on a relief basis.
- Responds to emergency calls in off-hours as required.
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: - Operation, work methods and limitations of heavy construction equipment used in road repair maintenance and construction.
- Safe work practices and safety regulations pertaining to the operation and transportation of the equipment.
- Preventive maintenance and minor repair methods related to the equipment.
- Measurement of elevations and grades.
- Use and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools related to the work.
- Earth-compacting techniques.
Skill in: - Operating, adjusting and maintaining heavy construction equipment.
- Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work.
- Cutting to grades and reading survey markers.
- Recognizing potentially hazardous conditions on the job site or with the equipment.
- Keeping basic written records and reports.
- Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Other Requirements: Must possess a valid California driver's permit and obtain a Class A license within 30 days. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions. Must be willing to work overtime or off-hours shifts in emergency situations. Must be willing to work with exposure to potentially hazardous substances and to traffic.
Desirable Education and Experience: A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is two years of journey-level experience in road maintenance work at a level equivalent to the County's class of Road Maintenance Worker II.

CalPERS RETIREMENT PROGRAM Employees fall into one of the following tiers based on the date you first start working for the county or any other employer that uses CalPERS for retirement.
- Tier I - Prior to 7/5/2012: 2.7% @ 55
- Tier II - Post 7/6/2012: 2% @ 55
- Tier III - Post 1/1/2013: 2% @ 62

- 2% means that for every year you work for the county, you will receive 2% of your maximum annual pay rate for every year that you work for us (or other CalPERS employers) if you work the required minimum number of years (that's called vesting) and retire after the age following the @.
- For example, if you work 20 years and retire at 62 years of age, you will receive 20 x 2% or 40% of the average of your three highest years of annual pay in retirement payments.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD Persons appointed to regular county positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.
